At the start of 2020 astronomer Barry Madore asked me to compile a ring galaxy catalogue with him. For two and a half years I searched for collisional ring galaxies, polar ring galaxies, Hoag-type objects and objects related to ring galaxies in the Legacy Survey and the Subaru Telescope Survey. The catalogue (with more than 1700 objects) has been finished and is currently under review. I’ll post a link when it has been approved.

Last year I picked up the search again. As of now I have got more than 500 objects, and another team of astronomers has expressed their interest in making a catalogue out of those objects. It is too soo to make any definite statements, but this new (Russian) team also expressed interest in observing and studying some objects.

I had a look at the objects the members of this site have posted since July last year, and I came across about 150 objects I haven’t yet found myself, but would gladly like to add to the collection.

Is it okay to use those objects for a possible new catalogue? If so, I will mention the username with the object in the discussion on Galaxy Zoo, and should there be a catalogue I will make sure those members will get acknowledged somehow, either as a co-author or in the acknowledgments.

If you don’t or if this site doesn’t approve of me using those ring galaxies, I will stay clear of them. I am not in the habit of stealing finds from other people.

Just let me know what you think about this. Only with your approval will I add your objects to the list.

Hi,

I think you would be best to reach out to the individual posters to find out how they would like to be recognized on a publication (eg, the name they would like used). If you have 150 objects, I bet the actual number of people is not that large - we have a few very prolific posters.

A few years ago we began a search for new potential polar-ring galaxies along with objects of interest based on various sky surveys including the DESI legacy surveys, HSC, H2O, and other images and publications.

As of right now our search is currently on hold while Chris focuses on other things, but we recently discovered over a thousand new polar-ring galaxies, combined with the known objects listed in publications.
