Legacy Survey outage

Backup (but limited) version at viewer.legacysurvey.org. Contents of the website are available at the Internet Archive’s WayBack Machine

2025/10/10 10:00 PM CT - Currently, the Legacy Survey services are down due to our server’s network and storage performance issues. We expect the webpages to be up by tomorrow morning.

Update: 2025/10/11 10:00 PM CT - The sites remain down. The site will hopefully be back up before Wednesday. NERSC staff investigating. Next update Tuesday, 10/14.

Update: 2025/10/14 5:00 PM CT - The sites remain down. No estimated uptime is available. NERSC Staff continue to investigate and troubleshoot problems, as the webpages will stay down for an extended period.

Staff are continuing to monitor and diagnose network and storage performance, and may perform rolling reboots through the cluster to apply new hardware and software configurations. Many workloads remain down at this time. Users are asked to refrain from starting additional workloads to prevent further impacts and to avoid interference with ongoing testing.

Update: 2025/10/15 06:00 PM CT - The sites are still down. It will likely be down for extended periods. We hope it will be back up by next weekend. Currently, Spin is undergoing system testing. At the request of NERSC staff, we will not relaunch the sites until the issue is fully resolved. I wonder if it’s caused by a massive custom catalogue upload in LS Discussion #14610 (nearly 30k objects) that may have overwhelmed the performance of Spin.

Update: 2025/10/17 08:00 PM CT - The sites will remain down throughout this weekend. No ETA is still available.

Update: 2025/10/19 04:00 PM CT - NERSC is continuing to investigate the ongoing issue in Spin. No ETA available. Next update tomorrow.

Update: 2025/10/21 07:00 PM CT - The LegacySurvey.org website will remain down for now, with the potential of it being back up soo. Currently, NERSC staff are continuing to investigate the issue with Spin. However, the contents of our website remain ‘available’ at the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. No ETA is available at this time, as no new information on Spin has been published on the status page.

Update: 2025/10/23 08:00 PM CT - NERSC is continuing to investigate the issue. Spin is currently undergoing periodic testing. Spin is currently running normally, and we will not start legacysurvey.org until the problem is solved, which I expect it to be back up by the end of the month or sooner.

Update: 2025/10/23 09:00 PM CT - The LegacySurvey.org main website is back up for now, as NERSC is gradually introducing new workloads; however, the website will probably go down again as the system will undergo a full shutdown while NERSC staff apply a separation of storage backends for the system. All of the services were briefly available around October 24, 2025 at 16:07 (-05:00).

Update: 2025/10/31 04:00 PM CT - The viewer and the contents are back up earlier this morning.
