Interesting object : possible droupout?

Hello everyone,

While reviewing Legacy Survey data, I found a clean potential dropout candidate that is absent in the optical bands (g and r) and clearly appears in the infrared band (z). I checked SIMBAD and found no cataloged object at these coordinates.

Could you please take a look and let me know your thoughts?

Coordinates: RA 185.5815, Dec 47.6353

Bands: Invisible in g and r (2016-2017) / Visible and bright in z (2016-2017, 90prime & Mosaic CCD)

SIMBAD: No match found

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Hi Oceane.

I think what you are looking at is a very distant galaxy, so you could be correct?
Light from distant galaxies travels to us for billions of years. Space stretches this light to longer, redder wavelengths by the time it reaches Earth. Red objects (like this one) can be best seen in the z band.

Yes, there are quite a lot of very red objects - as William said, either from redshift, or from intrinsically cool objects like brown dwarf stars.
