Cosmic ray is my guess.

What if what we are seeing a huge aurora? Maybe more common in certain areas like star forming regions. Could indicate the presence of a magnetar or some other dynamic occurence. This could account for the transient nature of it.

You can tell it’s a cosmic because of the sharp edges. No light that comes from above the atmosphere can produce an image that crisp.

I didnt think the edges looked that crisp especially towards the top which is what gave me pause to look in again.
