Mysterious purple object

I haven’t seen an object this purple before. Dustin, is it either a blue star or a quasar?

In SDSS this object is brightest in the i band. Seems kind of unusual.

Yeah, that is a kind of strange color! It does look point-like; could be star (weird color tho), quasar, or maybe even a compact emission-line galaxy. Hard to say without a spectrum.

SDSS says it is a star: http://skyserver.sdss.org/dr9/en/tools/explore/obj.asp?ra=%200.554&dec=%200.5890

If it isn’t it might be a purple pea.

I believe that SDSS classification is based on morphology (shape) alone; quasars and other stuff would also be called STAR. It really means “point-like”.

cheers,

I’ve seen many galaxies classified as star and vice versa in SDSS, never took notice of that ‘classification’ again.
