Just wanted to post this NGC 5084 because of an article on NASA.gov detailing how Legacy Data helped find a sideways black hole in NGC 5084; NASA Finds ‘Sideways’ Black Hole Using Legacy Data, New Techniques - NASA
Very cool, although when they say legacy data, they mean old data that has been processed with a new technique, not data from DESI’s Legacy Survey.
I knew that about the name. But it shows the importance of having the ability to go back and look at old “images” or data. I wish I had Radio and X-rays to compare it to visual on every object. I look forward to a future Sky Viewer of sorts that has it. A complete map is our far flung future. I lived every second of the 80s as a kid and having LS in my pocket feels like the far flung future. And it really is. I recently got this old book the consignment store Artifacts from 1946 stamped out of the collection of the Phoenix, AZ Library in 1959. I have a scifi stories monthly from 1960 that describes the year as the “Sputnik age” not that long ago.
