Is "Star Spray" from nucleus thing?

Interesting “star spray” outward from the nucleus, on both sides of edge-on disk
Legacy Survey DR 8 South Residuals, from Galaxy Zoo
Galaxy Zoo posting:

A crisper image from DES DR1 makes me believe it’s just chance alignment with a background object but I could be wrong!

What you are looking at there is the difference between the actual object and a computer simulation model of it. Since no real-life galaxy is likely to exactly match a “standardised” simulation model, there are always going to be differences which show up in the “residuals” layer. These can be very confusing, because they are not necessarily real structures that have any meaning, they are just differences between a real galaxy and an idealised model of one. It’s best to look at the raw data layers, I think.
