Interesting object-Anyone have any idea what this is about?

Hi,
That’s a Cosmic Ray – a charged particle that hit our detector. Normally we manage to detect and ignore them, so I’m not really sure why this one made it through!
Ways to tell it’s a cosmic ray:

  • it’s sharper than any of the other stars and galaxies – because it’s not coming from a bunch of photons that traversed the atmosphere and got blurred out, but rather hit the detector directly
  • it’s only in one band (one color)
  • if you click on the map and follow the “single exposures” link, you can see that it only appears in one of the exposures.

cheers,

then why is it that shape? shouldn’t it be more pointlike?

No, they go plowing through the silicon detector knocking electrons free as they ping around. This is a very usual shape for them.
