Galaxy half obscured artifact

The galaxy is half obscured. I thought it might be due to a clean up artifact, since there is a long grey tongue coming in from the right, but SDSS also has the same feature.

This question came up in Galaxy Zoo Talk

The “missing lower part” also may show up in WISE and GALEX images, and as it’s clear in both SDSS and DECaLS, it’s likely real (I didn’t check PS1). Curious.

Very interesting! Seem like a real feature of this galaxy, but obscured by what?
