I cannot get my head around the physics of an object orbiting a point in space a la JWST

Yeah, the Lagrange points are cool. The way I think of it is this: L2 is a bit further out from Earth’s orbit, so it wants to orbit more slowly than Earth. If Earth’s gravity did not pull on it, it would orbit more slowly, and slowly drift away from Earth, relatively speaking. But Earth’s gravity is just enough to overcome that tendency to orbit more slowly, keeping it orbiting at the same speed, but in a further-out orbit.
